So what is ‘grounding’?
Ok, so if you don’t know what grounding is, you’re actually in for a treat because this is something that might change your life…
If done well and often enough, I promise that you’ll at least feel more clear minded and balanced after a while.
Grounding is essentially the act of physically connecting with the Earth.
Yep, it’s as simple as that!
So, for example, taking your shoes and socks off and walking barefoot on grass, soil, sand or rocks would constitute grounding.
As long as you’re walking on natural materials that are connected to the earth, you’re grounding yourself.
This doesn’t include walking on concrete, asphalt, or any other man-made materials.
What are the benefits of grounding?
Those who regularly ground themselves say they reap the following health benefits:
- An increase in energy
- Deeper and more restful sleep
- Calmer and clearer thinking
- A feeling of peacefulness
- Better ability to focus
- Reduced pain (if they have been experiencing any, that is)
Some people who regularly ground themselves also claim that it helps to keep their skin in good condition and reduce skin issues such as acne.
You don’t have to be outside to ground yourself
Yep, this is actually possible! You needn’t go outside at all to ground yourself. You can connect with the Earth inside the comfort of your own home if you prefer.
Ideally, we would all connect to the Earth each day by walking barefoot in nature but in today’s busy world, that often just isn’t possible.
A great alternative is to buy a grounding mat like this one.
When I first heard you could use a grounding mat indoors to reap the benefits of grounding, I thought it was a weird concept. Surely you would have to be outside to reap the benefits?
Well, as it turns out, many people have reported experiencing the same benefits from using grounding mats as they have with connecting to the Earth!
There’s a huge choice of grounding mats available online including on Amazon.com.
Spiritual grounding
A powerful, spiritual way to ground yourself and become more aware of the present moment, is to imagine that you are connected to Earth’s energy.
Follow these super simple, quick steps:
- Sit with your back straight in a comfortable chair, close your eyes and not matter what surface your feet are on, image that they are connecting your the Earth’s surface.
- Take a deep breath in through your nose and see your feet connecting with the Earth.
- Visualize them touching the grass, sand, or any other natural surface.
- Breathe out through your mouth and repeat this process at least three times before opening your eyes.
- This method should help you to become more present and mindful of your current, moment by moment reality.
Remember that ANY grounding you do will be of benefit. Even if you can’t spare 20 minutes each day, try to find 10 minutes and that will be better than zero minutes.
If you don’t have a garden or a park nearby, think about getting a grounding mat and use it while watching TV or working on your computer!
The benefits don’t take long to become apparent
People have reported that grounding outside for just 20 minutes each day has helped them feel more energized, calmer, clearer minded and more positive.
Some people who tried sleeping on grounding mats or outside have also noticed that their symptoms have diminished in some cases. Here is a study showing some of the benefits of grounding.
